Gathering images

There are several ways you can gather images to analyse.

You can download a template to help you.

The following points should be considered:

Describing the purpose of a graphic
When describing the purpose of a graphic you should ask yourself what is the point of the graphic? Why has this image been included on the website?
Graphics can be used for many different purposes including to:

  • inform
  • simplify
  • entertain
  • shock
  • attract attention
  • make a point

Describing the target audience of a graphic

The target audience is the group of people the graphic is aimed at. There are a number of different elements you should consider when identifying a target audience, for example:

  • age
  • gender
  • location of audience
  • occupation
  • education level

Discussing the suitability of a graphic

You need to decide if the graphics you have collected are suitable for their purpose? Points to consider include:

Content:

  • Are there any aspects of the graphic that are not suitable for the product?
  • Are there any aspects of the graphic that are not suitable for the target audience?

The quality of the graphic:

  • Is the graphic pixelated?
  • Is the graphic the correct size?
  • Do the colours suit the purpose? Would alternative colours be more appropriate?

Describing the impact of a graphic
Does the graphic create emotion in the audience? Imagine you are a member of the target audience, try to gauge the effect the image would have on you.

Identifying the size of a graphic
The physical size of the image needs to be identified. If you hover your curser over an image the size of the image will appear. You should also consider the actual size on the page (what % of the screen is being taken up by the graphic?)

Analysing the positive and negative impact of the graphic
Describe the positive and negative features of the graphic. You could make comments on:

  • Image quality
  • Pixelation
  • Colours
  • Subject matter

Your comments will depend on the purpose of the image.
